The Lord’s Prayer
Teach Us How to Pray
Connect with It
What are some of the brand names that are popular right now (think clothing, shoes, products, etc.)?
Your name be honored as holy.
“Therefore, you should pray like this:
Our Father in heaven,
your name be honored as holy.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”
— Matthew 6:9–13
Know It – Honor God’s Name as Holy
Matthew 6:9 – KJV – “hallowed be thy name.”
Matthew 6:9 – CSB – “your name be honored as holy.”
Matthew 6:9 – CEV – “help us to honor your name.”
Hallowed = holy or set apart, acknowledging that He is above everything else and set apart from everything else.
We are asking that God would lift His own name up and set it apart.
We are also making this personal; we are asking God to help us make sure we keep His name holy.
How Do We Honor God’s Name?
Know It – Remember His Name
Deuteronomy 8:2
To remember God’s name is to keep His character and faithfulness in mind.
God’s name is tied to His actions, so His people won’t forget Him.
What can happen in our lives if we fail to remember who God is?
Know It – Rejoice in His Name
Psalm 99:9
To rejoice in His name is to lift up our praise and worship to Him.
What can happen in our lives if we neglect our praise to God?
Know It – Respect His Name
Exodus 20:7
Respecting God’s name means we don’t treat it like a joke, curse word, or filler phrase.
God’s name is weighty because God is holy.
How do we respect God’s name in a culture that seeks to soil it so often?
Know It – Revere God
Ecclesiastes 12:13
Fear = reverence
Reverence goes deeper than respect—it’s a biblical fear of God. For the believer, it includes understanding how much God hates sin and trying to live in obedience to God’s commands.
Why is it easy for us to fall into a trap as Christians regarding taking sin seriously?
Know It – Represent God
1 Peter 1:15–16
As Christians, we represent our God and Savior everywhere we go.
Our actions can either honor God’s name—or dishonor it.
Have you ever seen someone claiming to be a Christian but were in shock with how they acted?
Live It – Personal Reflection
When you enter into prayer time, do you take time to honor God by remembering who He is and what He has done for you?
Are you living a life that represents your Savior well?
Are you in obedience to Him?
Pulse Check
Have you found a quiet place to pray for 10 minutes daily?
Do you have a relationship with God as He is your Father?
Do you pray that God’s name be honored as holy?
Are you living a life reflective of that?
