The Lord’s Prayer

Teach Us How to Pray

Give us today our daily bread.

“Therefore, you should pray like this:Our Father in heaven, your name be honored as holy.Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”Matthew 6:9–13

Connect with It

  • What is your go-to food? If you could pick one meal what would it be?

  • What is one food you could eat every day that would horrify people around you?

  • What is a food that your family serves regularly that you just don’t like?

Know It – Our Daily Bread Principle 1

Exodus 16:12

Notice that the Israelites started to run out of the provisions they had taken with them from Egypt, and they began to complain to Moses and to God that they were going to run out of food.

God often leads us to a place where we must rely on Him to meet our needs, and He wants us to ask for help!

Know It – Our Daily Bread Principle 2

Exodus 16:13–15

The Israelites were confused by what they found the next morning. They had never seen anything like it before and did not know what to make of it.

Sometimes God provides in unexpected or unusual ways.

Know It – Our Daily Bread Principle 3

Exodus 16:16–30 & 2 Thessalonians 3:10

Some of the Israelites failed to follow what God commanded and instructed them to do, and the food they collected went bad or they found no food on the Sabbath to collect.

God’s provision may be tied to our willingness to follow His commands.

Know It – Our Daily Bread Principle 4

What lesson do you think God was giving the Hebrews—and us today—by only letting them have enough bread for one day at a time?

God wants us to put our trust in Him to meet our needs, not someone or something else. We should rely on Him daily.

Know It – Our Daily Bread Principle 5

Exodus 16:32–35

God wanted the Israelites to remember the provision He provided for them. They were to preserve the manna for future generations as a reminder of God’s faithfulness.

God wants us to remember what He has done for us in the past. He is faithful.

Share It

Notice the prayer—it does not say “give us this day my daily bread.” It says “give us this day our daily bread.”

We are to pray that God would meet our needs and the needs of those we love.

Never underestimate your prayers for your friends and family.

Live It – Personal Reflection

  • Are you relying on God to meet your needs, or are you placing your trust in someone or something else? Remember, He is faithful!

  • Are you following God’s commands for your life? What provisions may God be withholding as a result?

  • Are you praying for the needs of others?
